FABRIC & CARE

Our Recon Parka's are made from a cotton that has a dry wax finish for weather and dirt protection. Over time this dry wax finish will naturally start to wear off causing the cotton to 'Wet Out'. Below is a few tips on how to keep your new 7L investment in tip top shape.

How to re-wax waxed cotton:

Waxed cotton has been engineered to weather the storms and keep you sheltered from the elements. It is the first performance fabric which has been trusted for generations and has truly withstood the test of time. Naturally, if you want something to last you have to care for it. In just a few easy steps you can re-wax your product. Not only will this make it aesthetically like new, it will also optimise its performance. Knowledge is power and as custodians of a waxed cotton legacy we are here to take you through a step by step guide on the do’s and dont’s.

Just like knowing to separate lights and darks clothes when washing (we have all been there…) or how not to shrink your other half’s favourite jumper in the tumble dryer (hands up who’s guilty…) we have all learnt the hard way that reading care instructions is important!

You will be thrilled to know traditional waxed cotton is low maintenance:

  • Do not use soap or detergents
  • Do not machine wash
  • Do not dry clean
  • Do not Iron
  • Do not Tumble Dry

Fabric built to last a lifetime:

Wax cotton, cracks, creases and patinas, which is part of its beautiful character. The fabric tells the journey of the wearer through its gained vintage appearance. How charming is that?

The beauty of waxed cotton is its durability and longevity. The densely woven cotton is strong and reliable and unlike many alternatives, can be maintained by the end user.

Naturally through wear, wax gradually comes off the fabric. Depending on the usage you will start to notice some fading in areas revealing the original dyed shade of fabric (applying wax darkens the dyed shade). This is due to the wax rubbing against itself (i.e. underarm, inside sleeves, side of body) and from movement (i.e. at the elbows) these are need more regular attention maintenance.

We can offer wax tins available in 2 sizes; a 50ml tin and a 200ml tin. How often to re-wax your jacket will be down to how often you wear it, but we would usually recommend yearly.

All you will require a pan of hot water and a soft cloth or sponge:

  • Brush off any dirt or grit
  • Sponge down with cold water
  • Choose a warm room or outside on a hot day
  • Stand the tin of wax in hot water to soften the dressing
  • Work the dressing well into the garment using the cloth or sponge
  • Pay attention to seams, creases and dry patches
  • Rub in well, don’t paint it on
  • Do not use excess dressing
  • For a “factory” finish, blow evenly with a hairdryer
  • Hang the garment overnight in a warm place
